Correction, 31 October 2026: An earlier version said Search Console reports clicks from AI Overviews. Its generative AI report, launched 3 June 2026, shows impressions (not clicks or queries) for pages linked in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Operator take: Being able to see your AI Overview performance in Search Console is a real step forward — until now it’s been guesswork. Use it to find which of your pages get cited in AI answers, set that against pages losing clicks in your regular Performance report, then double down on the former and restructure the latter. Data beats speculation.
Google Search Console has begun surfacing how pages perform in AI Overviews — a generative AI report launched on 3 June 2026 counts impressions for your pages linked in AI Overviews and AI Mode, though not clicks or queries. For anyone who’s spent the last year guessing at their AI Overview exposure, this is the first real instrumentation.
What the data tells you
Broadly, you can start to see two things that mattered a lot and were invisible before: which of your pages are getting cited inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, and — read against click trends in your regular Performance report — which pages may be losing clicks to an AI Overview that sits above them.
That split is the whole game. A page cited in the answer is an asset to protect and replicate. A page losing clicks to an answer it’s not cited in is a page to restructure.
How to act on it
Start with the pages getting cited. Study what they have in common — almost always a clean, self-contained answer near the top, first-hand specifics, and proper author signal. That’s your template. Apply the same structure to the pages that are losing clicks without being cited: add the direct answer, tighten the writing, inject original data, fix the byline.
Then track the movement. As you restructure, watch whether previously-uncited pages start earning citations. This is the feedback loop that’s been missing — now you can actually tell whether your AI-Overview work is landing.
The mindset shift
For years the goal was ranking. Now there’s a second scoreboard: getting cited in the answer. Search Console finally lets you keep score on both. The Indian sites that treat AI Overview citation as a measurable, improvable target — rather than a vague threat — will pull ahead of the ones still just worrying about it. Measure it, template your winners, fix your losers, repeat.
