Correction, 31 October 2026: An earlier version described in-chat checkout as just beginning and India as behind on ChatGPT shopping. Product discovery has been available globally since April 2025, in-chat checkout launched only in the US (India saw a UPI payments pilot), and OpenAI scaled checkout back in March 2026 to focus on discovery.
Operator take: ChatGPT commerce is real and directionally important, but in-chat checkout hasn’t reached India beyond a pilot, and the buying behaviour is still nascent here. Don’t drop everything — but do start building the brand-mention and review presence that determines whether an AI recommends you, because that’s the groundwork that pays off whenever it lands.
OpenAI has been adding commerce capabilities to ChatGPT — in-chat product discovery and a US-only in-chat checkout, which it scaled back in March 2026 to focus on discovery. Given how many people already use ChatGPT daily, even a modest shift toward buying through it is significant. The question for an Indian brand is how much to react now.
What’s actually happening
The gist: ChatGPT can increasingly surface product recommendations in a conversation and, in some markets, move you toward purchase without leaving the chat. For a user, “what’s a good X for Y” starts returning specific products rather than generic advice. For a brand, the same logic as every other AI surface applies — you’re either in the answer or you’re invisible.
The honest India read
Two things temper the urgency for Indian brands. In-chat checkout launched in the US, and India has seen only a UPI payments pilot, although product discovery in ChatGPT has been available globally since April 2025. And Indian buying behaviour through AI chat, while growing, is still early — most purchases still run through marketplaces, brand sites and quick commerce.
So this isn’t a fire drill. But it is a clear signal of where discovery is heading, and the brands that prepare quietly will be ahead when it matters.
What to do now versus later
Now: build the foundations that make an AI recommend you at all — presence in the “best of” and comparison content of your category, genuine reviews and ratings, and a clear, citable description of what you sell and who it’s for. None of this is wasted; it’s the same work that improves your visibility across Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity and every other AI surface.
Later: as ChatGPT’s commerce features mature in India, revisit product feeds, structured data and any direct integrations the platform opens up. There’s no advantage to being first to a half-built feature — but there’s a big advantage to being an established, credible option in the model’s picture of your category when it does mature.
The practical stance: don’t chase the feature, build the presence. The brands the AI already trusts will be the ones it recommends the moment buying through it becomes normal in India.
